How to do it

  1. 1

Pour water tinted with pink food coloring into a large pan. Add glitter, plastic alphabet letters, small toys, and dried flowers. Freeze overnight until solid.

  2. 2

Place the ice block in a sensory bin or tray. Provide tools like spoons, droppers, and small cups of baking soda or warm water.

  3. 3

Let kids excavate the ice by pouring, dripping, and scraping to reveal the hidden letters and toys.

  4. 4

As letters are freed, place them on a cardboard sheet with the alphabet written on it and match each letter to its spot.

Tips & extensions

Freeze in layers, adding letters and flowers at different depths, so kids have to excavate progressively to find everything.
